Remembrance Sunday Arrangements 2020

Updated Monday 2 November 2020

The Town Council has for a number of years taken the lead in coordinating the Remembrance Sunday arrangements in Wilmslow.

The circumstances surrounding this year’s event are unique and have led many to ask as to how commemorations will be dealt with in 2020. To this end the Town Council considered the appropriate arrangements at its recent meeting.

It was concluded that the Town Council’s primary objective is to encourage compliance with Covid-19 restrictions and as a result will seek to minimise any gathering at 11am. The Town Council recognises the importance of Remembrance Sunday at both a national and local level and will ensure that a wreath is laid by the Chairman of the Council on behalf of all the residents of the town at the appropriate time.

In order to accommodate the regulations and the Town Council’s primary objective, Wilmslow Town Council will:

  • Endeavour to contact all organisations who usually lay wreaths in the Memorial Gardens and ask that they do not attend at the Memorial Gardens at 11am on Sunday 8 November but consider sending their pre-labelled wreath to the Town Council prior to Remembrance Sunday. These wreaths will be pre-laid (before 11am) or post-laid by Council officials.
  • Ask any organisation which nevertheless wishes to lay its own wreath to only do so from 11.15am, after the conclusion of the event, and advising that they will be individually responsible in maintaining the 2m social distancing rules and respecting the Covid rules in place on 8th November 2020
  • Ask that members of the public do not attend at the Memorial Gardens between 10am and midday on Sunday 8 November 2020 and instead consider watching the national Act of Remembrance on television and/or participating in the period of silence at home.
  • The Chairman of the Council will approach the war memorial alone shortly before 11am.  He will then read the Exhortation without sound amplification which will be followed by the 2 minutes silence at 11am and the Kohima Epitaph.  Following this a single wreath will be laid by the Chairman on behalf of the town of Wilmslow.
